Day 1 - Wednesday 25/02/2026

✈️ We flew in the afternoon from Mexico City to San José del Cabo International Airport. Our route around Baja California was: Todos Santos, Punta Tecolote, La Ventana and Playa Punta Arena.

1. Car rental

In Baja California, renting a 4x4 is pretty much essential, especially if you want to reach the most beautiful beaches, as you’ll need to drive through sandy roads and many unpaved areas.

We rented a 4x4 with a rooftop tent from Kavan Overlanding. If you’re planning to camp, it’s 100% worth doing it this way because everything is already set up.

💰 The price was around 800 USD, which is much cheaper than other companies, and the cars were practically new. Kevin, the owner, picked us up at the airport and drove us to the workshop where the vehicles are kept.

The car included headlamps, a portable battery and a cooler. That said, you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bags. Also, quick reminder about pillows — we forgot ours and honestly, you really missed them.

⚠️ Very important: get full insurance.

A stone hit us on the road and cracked the windshield, which is quite common on this kind of route where you’re driving on beaches, dunes and unpaved roads.

2. Groceries

Before starting the road trip, I highly recommend doing a proper grocery run.

If you’re planning to camp, here are MY essentials:

  1. Meat for BBQ on the beach

  2. Easy breakfast (bread, ham, cheese — and bacon is a must)

  3. Fruit or snacks (we bought tortilla chips and guacamole)

  4. Clamato and beers for micheladas (locally called “Ojo Rojo”)

  5. Cups, plates and cutlery

  6. Grill and BBQ tools

  7. Toilet paper

  8. Wet wipes

  9. Water

  10. Fire kit (wood, fire starter or gel, and a lighter)

  11. Lots of ice to keep everything cold

💰Our grocery shop cost around 300 €. It might seem expensive, but it’s part of the experience and you save quite a bit on restaurants.

3. On the way to our first stop in Baja

Once we loaded the car with everything, we drove to El Pescadero, a small town near Todos Santos, where we booked an Airbnb for the first night.

If you’re staying more than three days in Baja, it’s worth alternating camping and Airbnb so it doesn’t get too exhausting. We did: Airbnb → camping → Airbnb → camping.

The place we stayed at is called Cabañas 33 1/3. It´s a must try. They’re very rustic cabins but fully equipped. Personally, I much prefer staying in these kind of more adventurous places rather than a standard hotel.

That night we had dinner at Il Giardino in Todos Santos. Honestly, after several days of eating tacos, a good Italian restaurant feels amazing.

We were suggested trying Jazamango in Todos Santos, but we arrived quite late and the restaurant closed early, so we didn’t get the chance to try it. In case you’re luckier than us, book here.

Day 2 – Thursday 26/02/2026

Todos Santos → La Ventana → Punta Tecolote

We woke up, had breakfast and took the chance to enjoy a proper shower, as we were camping that night. The plan for the day was to head towards La Ventana, where we would spend the third night, with the idea of camping somewhere along the way and going horse riding.

🍽️ Stop in La Paz

On the way, I would definitely stop in La Paz for lunch at Oyster House, where they serve amazing oysters and one of the best “ojo de diablo” (beer with clamato) I’ve ever had.

Every two weeks they do a tuna cutting ceremony (“ronqueo”). We didn’t get lucky, but if you go and it’s happening, you 100% have to try it.

Horse riding

Baja California is an incredible place for outdoor activities. Before reaching La Ventana, we went horseback riding through the desert. It’s a great experience: you ride through cactus-filled desert landscapes and finish the route on the beach. If you can, I’d recommend doing it in the afternoon when it’s cooler.

📍 Rancho San Lorenzo (about 30 minutes from La Paz)

💰 Approx. price: 2,500 MXN per person (~135 €) - book here

That night we camped at Punta Tecolote, an incredible beach. The only tricky part was that we finished the horseback ride quite late and had to set up camp in the dark.

Important: bring fully charged headlamps in case the same happens to you.

(Small side note: Cosme is making me tell you that the headlamp situation was my fault… I told him they were charged 😅)

Day 3 – Friday 27/02/2026

Punta Tecolote → La Ventana

That day we drove to La Ventana, where we decided to stay in an Airbnb to rest properly and take a good shower.

We stayed at Salty Stars – Bahía Turquesa, right on the beach, just a few minutes from La Ventana.

💰  Approx. price: 100 € per night. If you say I sent you, you’ll get a 15% discount.

My only tip: if you stay beachfront, try to book a ground floor unit. The wind can be really strong (La Ventana is a kitesurf hotspot). We were on the first floor and it was so windy it felt like we were going to fly off the terrace.

We had dinner at La Tuna in El Sargento, about 20 minutes from our Airbnb. The seafood tacos are a must — they were incredible.

Day 4 – Saturday 28/02/2026

Whale watching + night in Punta Arena

That day was an early start. We woke up at 05:45 since whale watching tours usually leave at sunrise, around 06:30.

We went in February, which is one of the best months to spot whales, and although we only saw one with her calf, the experience was absolutely worth it.We also saw many other marine species and had the opportunity to swim with sea lions and dolphins, getting within less than two meters of them.

💰 Approx. price: 3,500 MXN per person (~175 €). It’s expensive, but totally worth it. I would do it again a thousand times.

Here’s our guide’s number: +52 1 612 105 0588

After the tour, we went back to the Airbnb, packed everything and headed to Punta Arena. It’s about one hour from Los Cabos, which makes it perfect if you’re flying out the next day.

Honestly, with no exaggeration, it’s one of the most beautiful spots I’ve ever been to. When we arrived, we were completely alone on the beach, surrounded by cows, watching hundreds of mobula rays jumping in and out of the sea.

We set up camp, watched the sunset and ended the trip with a proper steak barbecue with marrow bone.

⚠️  Important: buy water, ice, food and (in my case) A LOT of beer (since it’s basically all Cosme drinks…) before arriving, because there’s absolutely nothing there.

Day 5 – Sunday 29/02/2026

Punta Arena → Los Cabos → CDMX → Paris

Our last day started with an incredible sunrise, watching mobula rays diving into the water. We even went for a swim with them early in the morning — I assure you they were less than a meter away from us.

After breakfast, we drove one hour to Los Cabos, stopping at a gas station to clean the car and fill up the tank. Then we returned the car to Kavan Overlanding.

We gave Kevin, the owner, everything we had left from camping (grill, plates, cups, etc.) so he could reuse it. It´s worth doing this since you probably won’t be able to take most of those things back with you.

Once the car was returned, it was time to go back to reality… We took our 14:00 flight, arrived in CDMX around 17:00, stopped by at home to shower and reorganize my things, and later that night I took my flight back to Paris.

An incredible trip that I highly recommend and would repeat without hesitation!

Final tips for this Baja California Sur route

After doing this trip, there are a few things I would do exactly the same and others that I think are worth keeping in mind if you’re planning a similar route.

February is a perfect time for this trip

It’s whale watching season in Baja California Sur.

You definitely need a 4x4 in Baja California

To reach many beaches, you’ll have to drive on sandy roads or unpaved areas, so a 4x4 is basically essential. If you rent one with a rooftop tent, the experience changes completely. Sleeping on beaches like Punta Tecolote or Punta Arena was, without doubt, one of the best parts of the trip.

Alternate camping and Airbnb

After several days of camping, being able to take a shower and sleep in a proper bed is something you really appreciate. We alternated camping and Airbnb throughout the trip, and it was the perfect balance: Airbnb → camping → Airbnb → camping

Stock up before heading to remote areas

Especially in Baja California, when you go to places like Punta Arena, there’s absolutely nothing nearby, so make sure you bring:

  • water

  • ice

  • food

  • enough fuel

The best option is to do a proper grocery shop in San José del Cabo before heading out, because after that it’s quite hard to find large supermarkets or well-stocked stores. If you’re planning to do BBQs on the beach, take the opportunity to buy meat and firewood there as well.

Useful tips for camping in Baja California

  • Avoid collecting firewood directly from the ground or bushes, especially during snake season.

  • Always carry enough supplies before heading into more remote areas and take the trip at your own pace.

  • Baja California Sur is a place to drive slowly, stop often and enjoy the landscape. Don’t worry about long driving hours — the best views are usually along the way.

  • As for bonfires on the beach, they are technically not allowed, but it is a they are very common practice. If you decide to make one, try to avoid inhabited areas and stick to more remote desserted spots. Once finished, make sure the fire has been properly put out.
